Red Vega 03:13
He drives a beat up Chevy Vega scratched up cherry red Van Halen blasting on the stereo like he’s waking up the dead Mixing up a whiskey and a coke Sneaking out back for another smoke A quiet moment don’t last too long Until he cranks another song ‘Cause when the rock n roll runs out the summer’s gone He just got paid, the tank is full, and the girl has come to play They gotta hit that county line before she gives it all away A dream stretched out for miles and miles Chasing a song up and down the dial A quiet moment don’t last too long Until he cranks another song ‘Cause when the rock n roll runs out the summer’s gone Spring went by just like a song When autumn winds begin to blow, I’ll blame it on the stereo

Do right, do right mama Do right, do right mama Do right, do right mama Do right mama for me When you’re away And your heart is lonely And when you’re gone I hope you walk the line Every night I hope and pray That your heart won’t go astray And that you don’t find yourself Taken into temptations arms Well we both know That things get complicated We live our lives Together but yet apart And if you should find Your love for me is not that blind I hope that you don’t find yourself Slipping into temptations arms A stranger’s eye Can light the fire of passion A lonely heart Is like kindle to the flame Take my hand And I know it sounds old fashioned But together we will find our way again

You know I gotta run So we can have some fun now Do anything you like Under the sun now My honey by my side I think we’ll take a ride now You know we’ll paint the town We’ll turn it inside out now I’ve been waiting for oh so long and When we’re together nothing can go wrong now I’ve been waiting for oh so long And I can’t wait to do it again Later I’ll take you home So we can be alone now And we’ll stay up all night Watch the sun rise in the ‘morn now We’ll stay inside all day Call out of work okay now You know we’ll find a way To do whatever we can now

Well I won’t walk another mile You’ve been twisted all the while And I won’t wear my Sunday’s best Well I’ve still got your name tattooed upon my chest So take it easy Well I won’t work too hard Be on your honor and I’ll Be on my guard now You say things are still the same Why you won’t even change your name Now you’ve left it up to me But I can’t help but feel the pull of gravity now I know a little now You’ve got a lot to learn I’ll play my fiddle while They just watch the world burn Well it’s as good as it will get Like catching water with a net But you won’t say the things you need to say And I won’t bother listening anyway So take it easy Well I won’t work too hard Be on your honor and I’ll Be on my guard now

about

There is no better title than Play It Cool for The Frigidaires debut album. Filled with taut, reverb-laden melodies, the record makes writing hooks look easy. A quick survey of the tools—three guitars and a solid rhythm section—only disarms the listener further. It’s only upon closer inspection that songs reveal themselves to be the subtly intricate compositions they truly are.

From the drop, album opener “Rip Current” sets Play It Cool in a state of forward motion. Here, interplay serves to create a tension that pulls the listener further out to sea. Between the song’s verse and chorus, opposing of trial and triumph are introduced. Thematically, this tension serves as an undercurrent throughout the album. Next, The Frigidaires are quick to reveal their hand on “Red Vega”—they are equally deft vocalists, capable of air-tight three-part harmonies. Stacked at the top of the album, these openers prove the successfully band taps into the rich foundation of their surf forbearers only to chart a path of their own.

“Draggin,’” the opener on Side 2, proves that The Frigidaires can also bring the heat. Lead by wiry, intertwined leads set atop a propulsive rhythm, the song argues that, although the muscle car might be a thing of the past, a true car song doesn’t have to be. As Play It Cool winds towards its close, “Stormy Seas” provides a final Middle Eastern-influenced salvo before “Tide Pools (Reprise)” leaves only a piano to ease us off. It’s a welcome left turn in an album filled with welcome left turns. With their debut album, the band played their hand well, they played it cool.

Chill Out! Play It Cool January 1, 2024 through Otitis Media Records.

“Why are there three guitars?” The better question is, “Why not?” The Frigidaires are a b(r)and.
